SALCEDO, EASTERN SAMAR – The Local Government Unit of Salcedo commemorated the 10th year anniversary of the Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) through a series of activities honoring the resilience and growth of its people today, November 8, 2023.
The whole day activity was spearheaded by the MDRRM Office, with the assistance of other LGU departments.
The morning activity kicked off with mangrove planting at barangay Camanga, Salcedo, Eastern Samar at 7:00 a.m.; it was participated by the SSG officers of Salcedo National High School, SHEG members and 4Ps Parent Leaders of Camanga, Cagaut, and Cantomoja.
Sir Juanito Omlang, the Municipal Agriculturist, explained the connection of a healthy mangrove ecosystem to food security as mangrove serves as the spawning ground for many marine organisms.
The MENRO, Sir Danilo Duran, emphasized the importance of mangrove in times of disasters.
Another morning activity conducted was the community typhoon drill held at barangay Jagnaya – participated by 4Ps members and barangay officials. The activity aims to check and enhance the preparedness of the community in times of typhoon.
Ms. Antonette Taus, an advocate of OXFAM delivered a psychosocial number for the participants. The event was highlighted with a message of solidarity by the Executive Director of OXFAM, Erika Ione Gay Geronimo and Atty. Melchor B. Mergal, SPM of the province also emphasized the importance of preparedness in times of disasters.
The afternoon activity started with the photo exhibit at the Municipal Civic Center – that took the participants down memory lane during, before, and after Super Typhoon Yolanda wreak havoc in the province.
Stories and experiences of Yolanda was given by the former mayor, a child leader, Barangay official, and an LGU employee during the testimonial sharing.
The event finished off with a ceremonial mass and candle lighting.
This day embraces a decade stories of resilience of Salcedonhon.
